Let's take a look at why soft drinks (pop, soda, sodie pop, or whatever you want to call it), are not healthy for us, especially for our children. Unfortunately, the only good thing about pop is that it is relatively inexpensive, and it is easily accessible. However, this is kind of a "Catch 22" because the drink that was just consumed as a treat for most children is becoming the norm. Yes, instead of the healthy drinks like milk or water, children - even infants - are fed pop. I can't believe my eyes when I see this.
Let's first look at the negative effects of the pop. 1. High in sugar - 10 teaspoons in 1 can. 2. High in acidity 3. some pops reduces the absorption of calcium 4. stains the teeth 5. hard on the stomach and more. This doesn't even touch on the caffeine in the pop and what that does to the body. Pop represents the largest single food source of calories in the U.S. diet. Unbelievable, that we can't see how we are hurting, not treating, our children. Maybe a coincidence or maybe not but obesity and type 2 diabetes parallels the increase in soft drink consumption. "One study
states the odds ratio of becoming obese increases 1.6 times for each additional
soft drink consumed per day."
Now let's look at what we are depriving our children of when they consume a soft drink over a nutritional drink. The children don't get vitamin D or calcium any more from the 'old fashioned normal beverage' of milk. They don't get vitamin C and important antioxidants from the 'old fashioned normal beverage' of juice. They don't get fluoride because they are choose unhealthy soft drinks over water. Just imagine what their bones will be like after having years of being deprived calcium: now imagine these bones when they are older.
So we are hurting our children by giving them something that can actually harm their bodies; we are removing vital nutrients that would have helped them grow mentally and physically; and we are establishing unhealthy eating habits at an incredibly young age.
Don't feed your children what is easy or cheap or the fad (everyone else can have it, Mom) because it WILL hurt them if not now, when they are older. Feed your children smart nutritious choices, healthy choices, of foods that will help them grow physically and mentally into the best person they can be. Just a note, if you think your child isn't consuming many soft drinks (lemonade, pop etc), just do a quick check and record the consumption for a few months. That'll give you a good idea just how much they really are consuming.
REMEMBER- EVERYONE DESERVES TO FEEL EXCELLENT and BE HEALTHY.
